Poco Loops

Overview

These rides are in east central Putnam and western Kanawha Counties.

These three loops utilize roads that follow Manilla, Heizer and Kelly Creeks that are feeder streams to the Pocatalico River. The loops start in the town of Poca at the Library in front of the school. The loops follow one of the streams out of Poca to state route 34 on the ridge and then returns down one of the other streams. In general, you are gaining altitude leaving Poca and losing altitude returning to Poca.

General Information

.

Pavement: Manilla Creek, Heizer Creek, and Poca River North roads were paved in the Summer of 2023. Pavement on Kelly Creek Road is good. The worst pavement is on Silver Creek leaving Poca. Pavement on Route 622 and State Rotue 34 is only fair.

Climbs: There are no long climbs on any the the loop options. However there are several shorter steep ramps. At the end of Heizer Creek there is a 0.3 mile VERY steep climb up to route 34. This is encountered on a couple of the loops. At the upper end of Kelly Creek are some steep reamps. as well as leaving Poca heading to Kelly Creek. Route 34 is rolling ridge riding.

Traffic: State Routes 622 (1.6m)and 34 (2.9M) are two lane stripped roads and have the most, and highest speed traffic, but usually not heavy traffic. The other roads are generally non stripped and have only local traffic on them.

Water and Food: There are no water or food sources after leaving Poca. There is a grocery store across the street from the library in Poca.

General Route Description

Kelly Creek - Manilla Creek Loop: You have your worst pavement on Silver Street leaving Poca and some rollers before turning left onto North Poca Road. You have gently rolling road till arriving at route 622 where you have to be more alert to high speed traffic for the next 1.8 miles. After turning left on Kelly Creek you begin an easy accent of Kelly Creek till you get to a series of ramps/climbs as you cross the divide between Kelly and Heizer Creek. You have a VERY STEEP descent down to the junction of Heizer Creek Road. Turning right, you are immediately confronted with a VERY STEEP 0.3 mile climb up to state route 34. Route 34 is rolling ridge riding over to Manilla Creek. Manilla Creek starts with a gentle down grade and then a very steep descent with a sharp turn near the bottom as you drop to stream level. Once at stream level you have a very pleasant ride till you intersect Heizer Creek road about 2 miles from the finish. From there you have a rolling road to the finish.

Heizer Creek - Manilla Creek Loop Taking a right out of the parking lot, you cross the Pocatalico River and then take the next right onto Heizer Creek Road. You have about 3 miles of rolling road till you drop down to Heizer Creek. Once at creek level, you have a gentle asscent for the next seven miles till mile 10 when you reach the 0.3 mile wall that takes you up to State Route 34. Taking left on route 34, you have 3 miles of rolling ridge riding before turning left onto Manilla Creek Road. Optional Route:

Kelly Creek - Heizer Creek in Reverse Riding this in reverse is a great option. You do have a wall at the intersection of Heizer Creek and Kelly Creek Road to climb in this direction (I have to walk it, but it is short.), but may be easier overall.
